NCC signs deal with Chams, six others, to register mobile phone users
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has signed a deal with Chams, a Lagos-based technology company specialising in identity management and six others to carry out the government-led registration of mobile phone users across regions in the country.
Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Eugene Juwah, inked the contract with the companies in Abuja to flagging off the new round of SIM registration to last the next six months nationwide and create a database of over 80million active lines in Nigeria .
The telecoms regulator had earlier said that it chose to steer the ongoing registration alongside operators in order to fast-track the ongoing exercise initially kicked off by mobile network operators.
NCC said in statement today that the seven contracting partners for the programme to cover various parts of the country include Chams, which will cover Lagos State .
Others include SW Global which is covering South Eastern states including Anambra,
On the other hand, JKK will cover South West states of Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti and Ondo.
DATAGROUPIT will cover the North Eastern states of Yobe, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa and Taraba. EAGLE/CBC will cover the North West states of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa while E-Kenneth/SageMetrics will cover the South South states of Cross River, Delta, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa.
Juwah urged them to handle the project with all seriousness and commitment as it is a Nigerian project noting that, “as we sign this contract I will appeal to everyone involved in it to handle it with all seriousness. Let us try to do it because of what we are facing today; let us try to do it not only because of the controversy but also because good execution of the contract will make Nigerians happy. This agreement is not only for the NCC or the Nigerian Security Services but for Nigerians and the entire country,”
The SIM Card Registration project is coordinated by KPMG, an international professional services firm with a member firm in Nigeria , which was engaged to provide overall end-to-end project management coordination of the exercise.
NCC expressed confidence in the process that selected the contractors and urged them to execute the contract with dispatch.
CEO, CBC, Foluso Falaye, who responded on behalf of the companies says they are in partnership with the regulaory agency to deliver on the project.
Head, NCC Project Office, Abdullahi Maikano, reminded the contractors of the 6-month tenor for the contract and asked them to work according to schedule.
