First Bank of Nigeria has introduced new biometric Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to improve security security of its customers transactions and explored the unbanked segments across Nigeria .
The bank says that the biometric ATMs will use fingerprint authentication as well as personal identification number (PIN) for the approval of their transactions to secure their funds, a drive that also aligns with the financial inclusion initiative promoted by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The new technology would be available to existing cardholders, who may wish to add biometric authentication as part of their transaction approval process on the bank’s ATMs in addition to PIN selection while new cardholders will henceforth be migrated to the new platform.
First Bank says new cards will henceforth feature the fingerprint authentication feature and will also come in handy for those who cannot read nor write as well as the elderly who would be issued cards with only biometric authentication functionality.
CEO, First Bank of Nigeria , Bisi Onabanjo says “this development is consistent with our Bank’s tradition of pioneering far-reaching innovations in the financial services industry, as we strive to continuously provide products and services that facilitate national growth and development.”
He says the biometric ATM is a pioneering move by First Bank in the Nigerian banking sector leveraging on the Customer Identification System (CIS) platform. It was launched at the bank’s head office in Marina , Lagos and would be expanded to its strategic outlets in due course, says the organisation.
Group Head, E-business of FirstBank, Chuma Ezirin, notes that in the increasingly technology-driven business environment, First Bank is keen to providing solutions that are relevant to its customers’ dynamic needs.
The biometric ATM solution is available to the existing cardholders, who may wish to add biometric authentication as part of their transaction approval process on our ATMs in addition to PIN selection, while systematically new cardholders would be issued cards with only biometric authentication functionality, he adds.
Ezirin add that the use of customers’ biometric features for authentication is to enhance security and also addresses challenges of migrating diverse segments of customers to electronic channels which provides conveniences to its customers.
Onasanya adds that the bank intends to do alot of massive campaign to bring the new technology to the knowledge of the public, adding that “we acknowledge the fact that some people also avoid using ATM because of the fraud issue but with added technology on biometric ATMs, it is easier and safer for our customers to use.”
Additionally, Ezirim says “this is a great feat for the bank especially at this period where fraud prevention and building customer confidence on the use of electronic channels are key customer acquisition and retention strategies. This would also drive financial inclusion, a Central Bank initiative to address the banking needs of the unbanked population.’
The deployment of the new biometric solution, according to him, is a giant stride for the Bank as it not only provides convenience and security to our diverse customer segments, but also aligns with financial inclusion strategy of the Central Bank of Nigeria to address the unbanked population.
