Can Blogging Improve Search Engine Ranking?
Blogging can improve search engine ranking, but there are certain things that must be done in order to see improvement. A blog, in its simplest form, is a collection of articles, organized by date. Blogs are journals. It used to be that weblogs (the long form of 'blog') were maintained only be computer programs, as a way to track errors or activity. Now, blogs are used as marketing tools by businesses and individuals alike.
Blogging can affect search engine ranking for your site, depending on how you structure and use your blog. Your articles must be on topic, and you'll need to understand a little about deep linking, because that is one of the key ways that blogging can improve search engine ranking for certain pages in your website, or for the main page.
Where Is Your Blog?
If your blog is hosted on a different domain than your website (either on a subdomain, or another domain altogether) you are in the best position to improve search engine ranking by blogging. When you publish articles on an external blog and use anchor text links to link keywords in the article to certain pages on your website, you are effectively link building. External links carry a lot of weight depending on where they are coming from.
Internal blogs are also okay, because internal links count as well. Over time, you'll notice that some of your blog posts will either increase in page rank, or get more traffic than other pages due to their search engine ranking. Those pages will become good places to link from internally.
Use Links Effectively
When you publish posts, they should always include a handful of links. Link internally, to other static content on your site, and link externally, to relevant content on the Web. This is where blogging helps with search engine ranking. For example, if you have a web page on your site that talks about making candy, and you blog regularly, always linking the words "making candy" to the making candy page, you are reinforcing the authority of that page. Over time, this will help with search engine ranking for that page.
Use Categories Effectively
One of the most overlooked elements of a blog is the categories. Categories are very important. Most blogs are structured so that the posts are assigned to a particular category. Using the example above, if you didn't have a static page called "making candy" but you had a category called "making candy," you could link those keywords to that category page, giving it a strong authority. Make sure the meta title and meta description tags are formatted properly, and it will be well-optimized to rank well in search engine results pages.
Putting It All Together
Blogging is not a short-term solution for search engine ranking, even though there are articles and products out there that say the opposite. Search engine ranking is a bit of a long-term race, because effort that you put in today can easily be outdone by someone else tomorrow. The content on the Web is constantly growing, and changing, and if you don't continue to add content, eventually someone will outrank you.
The key is 100% fail-proof on-site optimization with content and meta tags, and to continue to blog on relevant topics and always add links to your site.
