5 Tips for Effective Blogging
Blogging is a good way to add to your personal or professional brand image. Blogs are often free to start and are easy to personalize. Here are some tips for effective blogging.
1. Blog from Your Passion
Choose your topic based on what holds your passion or interest. A common mistake new writers and bloggers make is to choose their topic based on what they think people will want to read most. They write to the audience instead of from the heart. This creates shallow writing and is difficult to sustain. A blog is a commitment - something you'll pledge to write, every week, for a long time. If you choose a topic you have passion for, you'll have the drive to keep it going, and the quality will be so high that the audience will come to you.
2. Blog with Experience
If you don't know your subject intimately, it will soon show. You will either run out of things to say, or you'll go out and gain some experience quickly. A blog written from experience and passion has a kind of depth that keeps readers coming back for more. Sharing your experience with your readers creates credibility, and soon your readers will see you as an expert on your topic.
3. Blog with Information
Even personal blogs can benefit from added resources. Making your blog informational gives your readers a reason to come back often. If your blog is about living with allergies, post extensive links to recipes, resources, and other allergy-related websites in a sidebar on your main page. Your goal is for your blog to be the first place they come when they need information on your subject.
4. Blog with Voice
Information is necessary and it will generate followers, but to get them to actually read your blog you need to focus on your writing. Inject your writing with humor, emotion, and personality. A good blog is informative and backed up with experience. A great blog adds a personal aspect that keeps readers invested, makes them care, and hooks them by the heart. How much of yourself you share depends on the subject you are covering, how professional you need to seem, and how comfortable you are with revealing yourself to your readers. Your blog can be a confessional, sharing every trial and triumph, or you can share yourself gently, in quirky asides, as you give information and details. Don't discount the power of personality, and you'll gain readers as passionate about your blog as you are about its subject.
5. Blog with Precision
Write what you know, and research what you don't. An otherwise excellent blog will lose all credibility, and its readers, the first time it publishes something untrue, libelous, or imprecise. With touch-button publishing, it can be tempting to make your blog entry public immediately. Always take your time to check your work, and you'll keep those readers you spent so much time and energy recruiting.
Blogging about a subject you love opens you and your readers to a world of enjoyment. Keep them in mind as you blog, but write what you know and love. Keep your voice in your writing, keep it genuine, informative, and accurate. Connect with other people that are interested in your topic through forums and social media, keep writing, and your blog will be a success.
