Blogging is a popular way to create an online presence for personal or business reasons. You can build a blog for free and begin posting content right away. But, what good is that content if no one is reading it. Here are ten practical ideas you can use to draw traffic your blog needs to survive.
For all the successful blogs found on the Internet, there are hundreds more that failed. Running a blog is no different from running a business website. It requires serious focus, effort and time. Unless you are willing to do this your blogging days are surely numbered.

Not being serious is not the most common reason why blogs failed to survive on the web. Newcomers to the blogosphere generally enter the realm of blogging ill- prepared. Creating a blog is about the easiest thing to do by anyone who is net savvy. However setting up a blog site and posting content is no guarantee of visitors. Getting visitors to your blog requires the use of certain strategies.

1. Fresh Content


Blog visitors want to read something different each time they return to you blog. If they don't find anything new on their next visit your can rest assured they won't be coming back for another visit. So you need to post fresh content to your blog at regular intervals-say, at least two posts each week. A blog site allows you to write and save your post as draft to be posted at a later date. Isn't that convenient? So go ahead spend one day in the week writing up two or three blog posts, save them and schedule the posting. You stay ahead of your posting schedule with your blogs queued up and ready for posting on schedule.


2. Article Marketing


Blogs are usually dedicated to a certain niche or target audience - and your chosen niche must necessarily be something close to your heart: one that interests you or you have reasonable expertise on the subject. If you can create content of quality you can submit them to article directories. Use the resource box to advertise your blog so people can find you and your blog.


3. Social Networking


Join these networking sites so that you can associate with or join groups of people with similar or related interests. Social Networking sites are free and have been widely used as an advertising channel for blogs and websites. So go ahead and join the likes of Twitter, Face book, MySpace and Squidoo among others.


4. Viral Marketing


Hand out business cards that have your blog address on them to family, friends, co-workers or even strangers. If your blog content is any good these few will mention your blog to people they know - that's viral marketing work traditionally know as word-of-mouth advertising.

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". This tool allows visitors to subscribe to your blog feed. They get automatic updates by email each time you post new content to your blog. They are reminded to check your blog - wonderfully convenient for you isn't it?


6. Submit Blog to Search Engines


Doing this allows your blog to be ranked. Google and Yahoo! are two of the most popular search engines you want to crawl your blog pages. It doesn’t guarantee top ranking, though. To be able to get high ranking requires some expertise. So start learning how.


7. Visit other blogs


Show your appreciation to those who visit you by also posting comments on their blogs. It is a gesture that shows others you are not just out to advertise your blog alone. Add links to your blog in your comments.


8. SEO Marketing


Now this requires a bit of learning and studying. If you understand what keywords mean then load your blog posts with relevant keywords that will draw the attention of search engines. Keyword density between three and ten percent is recommended to achieve higher page rankings in search engines. Do your keyword research thoroughly.


9. Join Forums


If you are blogging to make money, obviously traffic is absolutely vital. Your immediate concern at the early phase of your blogging venture is there for to build traffic. So you need to advertise as widely as possible. Joining business forums gives you the opportunity to advertise yourself and your blog to forum members. You do this by frequently and smartly in forum discussions by posting comments, ideas and opinions.
