The Top 7 Certification Mistakes

Posted on 12:13 AM by Unknown

Like anything else, to obtain a technical certification may be good or evil. Here are the top mistakes to avoid certification.

1. Going after a "hot" cert, instead of something I love doing. Many people in the transition of information technology (IT and others, but want to move to another area) wants to certification based on their perceived popularity at the time.

This is a bad strategy. On the one hand, an area that is hot right now could be very cold in six months. These trends are impossible to predict.

2. Not having enough experience in the first place. Hiring managers have become more sophisticated on technical certifications in recent years. When they see a certificate, ask if a candidate has a background in proportion. This is because some powers seeking employment and attempting to use certification as a substitute for experience.

Remember: there is no substitute for experience. Start at a low level if you are just entering the computer, such as working in a help desk or work for free to help local charities, nothing to get their hands dirty. Then, your certification will carry more weight, and your chances of working together to increase considerably.

3. Using a unique method of study. Books can be useful tools for certification preparation. Thus, simulation labs. Like the classroom and online.

Do not limit your preparation methods of these types. The text book can help you a lot more once in a laboratory. the instructor-led training with video tutorials reinforce learning concepts.

Variety is not only the spice of life, but can hit the certification preparation for the next level.

4. Try before you're ready. It's a good idea not to have a deadline for certification. In some cases, as they need so your business can get a government contract, the period may be necessary. But in other cases, take your time.

Would you be fully prepared for review before the test. If you think you need a week or a month - or more - be patient and delay the review. If you do not have the concepts and practical knowledge that will make you cold hard testing and live in an environment where the bullets fly. Patience is a virtue of certification.

5. Assuming that the certification will fast track your career. Some people expect an immediate increase or promotion when the ink is dry on your card. More letters after their name (eg, MCSE, CCIE, CISSP, RHCE, and so on), more likely to believe they deserve the corner office.

Certifications are an indication of its value as an employee, but there are many others. They are experience, communication skills, ability to be a team player, etc. If you are not advancing the way you think it should be, ask your manager for an honest assessment of what areas that need strengthening. Certification is no guarantee of success.

6. The use of braindumps to prepare. braindumps for certification have been covered elsewhere on this site. For those unfamiliar, braindumps site includes specific questions and certification test answers and take the test - for a price.

Braindumps are not ethical to use, no different from making an early test at school and regurgitating answers. Is it cheating, pure and simple.

The other disadvantage is that obtaining a certificate in this way means that you do not understand the material, so be prepared for the rights to their work if they manage to get hired.

7. Not a thorough investigation of the training companies. There are hundreds of places to receive training certification. Include technology providers like Microsoft, Sun, Cisco and Oracle, independent suppliers, such as (ISC) 2 and CompTIA exam preparation companies, such as Transcender and MeasureUp, organizations of Boot Camp, and more. The list is long.

Not all these companies are created equally. Do your homework before doing your homework, and you're much more likely to find the kind of training that fits your learning style and goals. Search out certification forums like the one on this site, and ask students what they liked. Talk to an instructor or two ahead of time. Ask for a list of graduates and talk to them.

Picking a training company is an important decision; don't take it lightly, and your chances of having a great training experience, leading to successful certification, increase greatly.
