Digital Economy - Nation is On Track-Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that with the sustenance of the on-going investments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry by both government and Organized Private Sector (OPS) Nigeria will soon meet the Vision 20:20 target of being among top economies in the world by the year 2020.
Speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Youth Empowerment and ICT Foundation's held in Lagos Tuesday; Dr. Jonathan said "government has embraced many initiatives aimed at digitally empowering Nigerians to tap into the digital economy".
The youth empowerment scheme is the flag ship project of Jim Ovia Foundation (JOF) designed to raise digital awareness amongst Nigerian youths in secondary schools.
Ovia, it would be recalled is the immediate past Group Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank International Plc.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Alhaji Baba Umaru Farouk, President Jonathan maintained that "the federal government has for long accepted the reality that no nation can successfully compete and grow her economy without an equally strong focus on youth engagement with digital economy".
President Jonathan further revealed that "a major step in this direction was the establishment of a Digital Bridge Institute (SBI) in Abuja with a strong focus on manpower development training of trainers who are expected to pass the knowledge down in their various establishment at all levels of the society".
Besides, he recalled that "government recently launched a new National Curriculum for secondary schools which places strong emphasis on technical skill acquisition with a special focus on computer and digital skills.
Jonathan further revealed that the Ministry of Youth Development is also fusing into new digital economy vide a collaboration with the Micorsoft Corporation on a wide range of training programmes for Nigerian youths, adding that ICT has now become a major branch of education across all the newly constructed national Youth Development Centres in the six geo-political zones.
According to him, government is currently working on what he called "Youth Digital Economy Bill expected to harmonise, enhance and integrate digital creativity among the youths while building potentials for earnings for youth digital inventors, marketers and other stakeholders in the new digital economy".
Earlier in his remarks, promoter of the foundation, Mr. Jim Ovia expressed joy on the continuous empowerment of Nigerian youths by his foundation in the last 10 years.
He said "the foundation, apart from yearly donation of new computers to less-privileged schools in the country, has continued to train freely not less than 100 Nigerian youths in different fields of profession in the universities".
Elated Ovia noted that "today JOF is proud to have sponsored the training of 1000 Nigerian youths and is ready to do more".
High point of the event include the donation of computers to over 50 secondary schools in Lagos while 10 select under-privileged schools received five computers each. Five students who answered questions thrown at them correctly were rewarded with a computer each.
The computers from JOF come with one year internet access powered by Visafone telecom group.
Motivational speakers trilled the over 4,000 students in attendance. Among the speakers include former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Ibidapo Obe, Founder, Bellanija, Miss Uche Eze and Mr. Kekere Ekun.
