Electric Cars Vs. Gas Cars

Electric Cars Vs. Gas Cars

If manufacturers are to be believed, one has several reasons to prefer electric cars over gasoline powered cars. In the following electric cars vs gas cars comparison, we will evaluate these reasons and see whether these claims really hold ground.
After a brief stint in late 19th century and early 20th century, electric cars are back in the market with a bang. Gasoline powered cars have come under the scanner for their tendency to pollute the environment and rising price of oil over the last few years. This has no doubt contributed to resurfacing of electric cars - which seem to be a lot better than their predecessors. Are these electric cars ready to take on their gasoline counterparts? The last time they tried to make a mark in the automobile sector, they were wiped off by internal combustion engine cars. So do they really stand any chance this time around? Questions exist in plenty, and the only way you can get the root of this is to carry out a head to head comparison of the two.

Electric Cars vs Gasoline Powered Cars: Which is Better?

The basic difference between electric cars and gas cars is the source of power that either of these two types of cars resort to. In gasoline powered cars, gasoline - which is stored in fuel tanks, is used to power the engine. The engine eventually powers the transmission, and this - in turn, rotates the wheels. On the other hand, electric cars use a set of batteries to power an electronic motor which in turn powers the transmission, and rotates the wheels. (See how electric cars work) The electric cars in production today are better than their predecessors who were wiped off the roads by internal combustion cars. In a bid to fix the loopholes that marred the electric cars of 19th and 20th century, the manufacturers have reduced the gap - in terms of performance, between gas cars and electric cars by a significant extent.

The fact that electric cars are environment-friendly is perhaps the most important point that you need to take into consideration when you pit them against their gasoline counterparts. Gasoline cars burn fossil fuels to generate power, and thus contribute to environmental pollution. The atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide - which happens to be a by-product of internal combustion engine, has increased manifolds over the last few years and the rising number of gas powered cars has an important role to play in this. Other than this environment friendliness, the fact that you can conveniently charge the set of batteries in the electric car at home itself is again a definite advantage. In order to refuel your gasoline powered vehicle on the other hand,

you will have to take the trouble of visiting a gas station.

Even though electric cars boast of several benefits, there do exist some drawbacks of these cars which give gasoline powered cars and edge in this comparison. Among the numerous limitations, their hefty price happens to be one of the most important factors. Owing to high production cost of these vehicles and the additional lithium-ion battery set the few models which are available in the market are also priced high. Similarly, the absence of public charging facilities also makes long journeys a bit risky. Critics of electric cars are of the opinion that calling them environment-friendly is not correct, as they are also dependent on electricity - which is produced by burning coal. Similarly, the production of batteries (as well as their disposal) which are used in electric vehicles also comes heavy on the environment.

The electric cars vs gas cars battle ends in a stalemate when all these points are taken into consideration - with both contenders having their own pros and cons. The electric cars in production today are much more efficient as compared to those of the yesteryears, and they will continue to become better with time. It would be least surprising to see an electric car model which will be more efficient and sleeker than the ones in production today sometime in near future. As far as the difference between electric cars and gas cars cost is concerned, government is trying their best to promote the sales of such environment friendly cars by offering tax rebates - which brings their price down by a significant extent, on these models.
