Lagos. February 5, 2011. Globacom, promoters of the privately-owned Glo 1 undersea cable, has fired another shot in the ensuing price war in the communications market by lowering the entry bar and raising the data volume on its Internet service.
The Second National Operator announced that its 3G Internet modems will now cost N5000, a price cut from the previous N8,500 which the Second National Operator (SNO) announced as the lowest in the competitive market for Internet service offerings in the country.
Internet and other data services as become the new competitive turf for operators trying to meet the needs of the vibrant telecoms market with over 86million active phone lines at the end of November 2010, according to official figures.
Glo Mobile, the wholly-owned mobile business unit of the SNO and rival MTN, Airtel and Etisalat have 3G licences to enable them offer high-speed data services to explore new revenue streams and retain their growing subscriber base.
Glo’s price review also affects various data plans across the service plans for its 3G offerings.
Under the reviewed price, subscribers on its Always Max plan now get a 25per cent cut in rental fee which will see them paying N7,500 against N10,000 charged previously. In addition, data volume for this plan, offering all-day Internet access for 30 days increases from 5GB to 6GB.
Data volume on the G300 pack with 90-day validity increases by more that 100 per cent from 4GB to 9GB in what Glo reckons will enable subscribers to the package to download more than they did before now at no additional cost.
Head, Glo 3G/Blackberry Sales, expects the price reviews will give more value to the customer and claims they are the best 3G Internet packages in the industry in terms of value and pricing.
“The Always Max subscriber makes a savings of N2,500 every month and is able to do more with the increased data volume. The G300 customer has also been empowered to do much more with the additional 5gigabytes”, adds Jewesimi.
Glo sees the growing social media services among subscribers and it is promising that in addition to the high speed Internet experience, users of Glo 3G modems are guaranteed effortless browsing and download on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, among others.
The Glo 3G Plus High Speed Internet offer include the Always Min package which gives the user a month all-day access to the Internet for N5,000. There is also Always Day plan with a fee of N500 for all-day access for 24 hours and the G100 with a monthly fee of N6,000 featuring 100 hours and all-day access.
The Glo Flexi plan comes in two categories: the G Work, attracting N6,000 monthly fee with 8a.m – 9p.m access for 30 days and the G Leisure, with monthly fee of N5,000, 30-day access from 8p.m-9a.m daily and all-day during weekends.
